Another Yuletide in the books...and movies and plays and videogames and Other Media... ;)

I got assigned to write fic based on the hilarious Font Conference CollegeHumor video. Among other things, this made me aware of the existence of the sequel, Font Fight, and my recipient's prompts inspired me to write a fix-it fic for Helvetica and other character "deaths." Full disclosure; I usually use Windows, and am not very familiar with Helvetica, but that didn't stop me.

Of course, no Font fic would be complete without actual fonts, so I got to learn some Ao3 skin tricks to display as many different fonts in-text as I could!

Font of Every Blessing (3258 words) by primeideal
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Font Conference
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Times New Roman/Wingdings
Characters: Times New Roman, Comic Sans, Wingdings, Helvética
Additional Tags: fonts, Character Death Fix, Show Creator's Style for Full Effect, Yuletide 2013
Summary: Between rumors that Helvetica's been resurrected, and attempting to communicate with Wingdings, there's lots to keep Times New Roman busy. Fortunately, Comic Sans is always ready to save the day.

When the nominations came in, I saw several fandoms that, while not requested by the same people, seemed to work well together. Along with the Font Conference, there was Printing and Typesetting (anthropomorfic), (horror) Windows 95 Tips, and Minesweeper, where I'd already written about the adventures of sisters Timer and Mines Remaining. It all boiled over into a big crossover, which included wizards, pangrams, and me learning more about getting ASCII characters to display in HTML so that all of Wingdings' "dialogue"--such as it is--would come through.

Summary: When the Quick Brown Fox is abducted by agents of the nefarious Windows 95, it's up to superhero Comic Sans--and his sidekick Wingdings--to brave the pitfalls of the minefield and reunite the fox with his faithful companion, the Lazy Dog.

I've had "Chess" (the musical) on my mind on and off for a while; specifically, the 2008 version of Leonid Viigand. I was glad to have an excuse to write more about him for Yuletide, and, as usual with me, shoehorn everything into my contrived chronology because I care more about matching the timing of RL chess tournaments than I should. Oh well.

Here's to a storied new year!

I tend not to crosspost all my fic here, it's mostly on Ao3, but I wanted to make a post for two of the projects I've been working on in the last couple months. First, a Les Mis fic, incorporating an RL republican of the 1832 era (and, coincidentally, important mathematician):

Cosets (After the Letters) (13729 words) by primeideal
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Les Misérables - Victor Hugo, 19th Century CE France RPF, Arts & Sciences RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Combeferre/Évariste Galois
Characters: Combeferre (Les Misérables), Évariste Galois
Additional Tags: Community: makinghugospin, epistolary in parts, Mathematics, Algebra, Bad Puns, basically as many math puns as I could fit in, As canon-compliant as I could make it

Love, revolution, and abstract algebra: 1830-1832.

As I explain in the authors' notes, :I had prompted Galois fic within a week or so of finding the kinkmeme, so I think this is in part the story I've wanted since last February...I just had to get off my butt and write it myself."

Also in the musical-theater realm comes a project that might not really fit on Ao3, it's just floating in the Google Docs cloud. Months ago on Tumblr, a "Chess" fan asked What if Freddie was Florence's brother, and shared her Hungarian-refugee backstory? At first it didn't seem plausible, but then I found myself asking, well, how would that work...

So, this explains a little more of the background and my thought processes, while this is the Frigyes Vassy AU itself.

Like I said, I have a lot of different projects bubbling...this is just for my own recordkeeping on dreamwidth. :)

Dear Yuletide author/random passerby/what have you,
There once was a wintertime fest
For small fandoms we love the best!
So I'll love any plot
You write, whether or not
It's anything I could have guessed!
(AKA, optional details are optional! Write whatever you'd like, I'll definitely enjoy it. These are just some ideas to get you started.)

My name is also primeideal on Ao3! If you've been around, you might know me as Ember Nickel.
Dear Writer tag, for previous letters (to see where I've stolen much of this from!) I was fortunate to receive Will Grayson, Will Grayson fic for the recent Fic Corner exchange, but it's such a tiny fandom there can and should always be more; and I requested Animorphs last year, but the others are new.
I love happy endings, sad endings (when providing some measure of closure or melodrama), snark, wordplay, gen of any stripe, friendships and familial bonds, most canon ships for these fandoms, and general nerdery.
I do not like ambiguous endings, issue-fic, character or fandom-bashing, religion-bashing, explicit sex, rape/non-con, most non-canon ships for these fandoms, or overly pretentious, "post-earnestness" style. I'm here for joy. (Or groaning at bad puns, or melodrama...but something sincere.)
You can read my fics on ao3  (where I'm also primeideal) to get a sense of my taste. I'm infrequently on #yuletide chat, as primeideal, but don't expect to find me there on a regular basis. I'm on Tumblr too, which is mostly me rambling about my own fic, but I mention a couple of these fandoms every once in a while (of course I would love fic for the other fandoms, too--those are just the ones where I sometimes have an audience!)
Request: "Anything in this fandom. I adore Andalites and would love to read some Elfangor/Loren from the Earth years, or Tobias and Ax being shorms, but I'd also be up to see gen with the main six, Rachel/Tobias shipfic, maybe some Rachel/Marco banter, Tom shipping Jake/Cassie, or OC worldbuilding fic exploring some of the other fronts in the galactic war (the Iskoort and the free Hork-Bajir were sort of abandoned plot threads)."
In terms of the tones I enjoy, "The Andalite Chronicles" and its emphasis on hope (despite some tragedy) was one of my favorites of the series. I like that mix more than the giddy, off-the-wall "btw we're in Atlantis now?" of the middle of the series, and also more than the bleak ambiguity of the end. Another thing I don't care for is inaccurate teleology, in this case waxing poetic about how such-and-so-morph was "designed" or "perfect" for speed/strength/stealth/surprise/something. But like I said, anything goes.
Request: "Shogo Kawada: Something with pre-movie Shogo would be great, maybe exploring his relationship with Keiko and how that progressed before or during the first program, showing his dark side during that Program, or how he hacked into the collar system before the second program. Anything about his friendship with Shuya and Noriko, during the movie itself, would be great too. If you'd prefer to bring in some novel or movie characterization, I wouldn't mind, but there's no need."
While I love all continuities of the story, I first encountered it through the movie, and that version of Keiko's calculated sacrifice is fascinating to me, so I'd especially like to see something drawing on that canon. (I'm not familiar with the sequel movie, so please nothing drawing on that--although that shouldn't be too hard if you're writing anything Shogo-centric.) Although just a few characters were nominated, if you'd like to do something using more non-nominated characters, feel free to bring in anyone you'd like (Shinji? Yuko? Mizuho? Anyone!) I'd prefer no Kazuo- or Mizuho-centric fic, though.
Request: "As Inigo Montoya was the only character nominated, I'll focus on him, but including other characters would be fine by me. With Inigo, his post-movie adventures in piracy would be hilarious, whether that includes rhymes with Fezzik or more swashbuckling encounters with OCs. Does he deal more mercifully to victims than the previous Dread Pirates Roberts, and if so, how does his legend get around? Does he reunite with Westley and Buttercup later? Something introspective about his having to get over the need for revenge could also be insightful."
I'm not familiar with the book, so I'd prefer no drawing on that canon, thanks! If Inigo's giving you trouble to write, I'd also be interested in seeing anything about the boy from the frame story and/or his grandfather. Grandpa hearing the story from his family? And the grandson seems to have very clear ideas about how stories should be told...I can see him becoming a fix-it fanfiction writer years down the line, if you're in the mood for something meta like that.
Request: "Scotty and/or Benny in the intervening years from the main story to the epilogue scene? As I love baseball, any funny anecdotes from their parallel journeys with the game would be very welcome, but if you'd prefer just to write about their friendship over the years, that's fine too. If you're interested in them as kids, I'm guessing Benny in particular would, I assume, have to make his way into a more organized baseball team, leaving behind the chaos of the sandlot; how does he bring himself to make that changes, and/or how do Scotty (or the others?) support him? Or maybe, how does Scotty's relationship with his mom and stepfather evolve after the main plotline?"
I'm not familiar with the sequel movie, so please nothing based on that. I'd also prefer to keep the emphasis on Scotty and/or Benny rather than any of their teammates, though some degree of ensemble fandom is fine with me. Completely gratuitous, but I've just moved to LA in time to bandwagon my way into the Dodgers' playoff chase--while they're not really the team of my heart, and I don't know enough about the city to necessarily appreciate anything Dodger-specific, trying to find a timeline for the movie versus the Dodgers' real history would certainly entertain me. How about Scotty hero-worshiping Vin Scully...?!
Request: "I've requested Tam, Thom, Moiraine, and Loial, so thanks for volunteering to write all of them, but for this fandom I'd happy to see just one, two, or three rather than all four of the requested characters--please don't feel like you have to force them in. For all four of them, I'd be interested in something post-series; where do they go from the events of the last battle onward? Thom and Loial have their different stories to write, anything about those (similarities? differences? meta-level commentary) would be fascinating, as would Thom/Moiraine or Loial/Erith. With Tam or Moiraine, I'd love to see Rand eventually revealing himself to them, maybe a while down the line once the tension of the Dragon's Peace has calmed down."
One of the reasons I'd love to see Rand+Tam or Moiraine gen is because I felt the ending was sort of anticlimactic, in terms of letting Rand walk away with all his romantic relationships intact but burning the bridges on all the other people who care about him (as a person and not necessarily a political tool). So if you'd like to write something similar with Rand+Mat or Perrin, even though I didn't request them, that would be great too. With Loial, I think there's lots of room for worldbuilding Ogier culture (post-Battle), if you'd like to work that in; maybe he runs into Perrin and they learn things about the Tinkers' Song? Feel free to bring in OCs, if it helps.
Request: "Anything goes, maybe post-book but don't hold yourself to that. Given the themes of the book, the importance of friendships and non-romantic relationships was something I'd really enjoyed, so I'd be interested in seeing more friendship stuff with Uppercase Will and Tiny (before or after the book). Or, at some other point, Tiny and Jane (setting up the Gay-Straight Alliance?) Uppercase and lowercase Will going on to be closer friends? Making fun of musical theater plots? Not that I'd mind Uppercase Will/Jane, either!"
Maura was not nominated, but if you'd like to write about her and lowercase Will, I'd be happy with that--I thought the story was a surprisingly realistic take on the importance online relationships can have to us. Another random plot bunny would be lowercase Will (perhaps influenced by any of his friends you choose) making amends to the math team (anything involving math competitions will definitely make me squee). Actually, anything specifically referencing the Chicagoland settings will make me squee too. I'd also be happy to read Will Three/Tiny, if that's your ship.
I'll repeat, optional details are optional! So be it something dental to please my sweet tooth, or a diamond in the rough mines of fandoms I've never heard of, write whatever you'd like, have fun, and I'm looking forward to your story! :)

I might be overreaching here, but I was daydreaming today trying to figure out what I like so much about Battle Royale. I'm wondering whether it has something to do with how it does and doesn't play with the conventions of a certain "Rule of Three."

(Rambling and spoilers on Tumblr!)
primeideal: Multicolored sideways eight (infinity sign) (Default)

For my last couple fic-exchange requests, for the "optional details" sections, I've mentioned things like "I like humor." Which, I'm realizing, is probably an unhelpful thing for me to say. (If for some reason you've been assigned to write for me and are browsing this journal; don't worry! This isn't about my request specifically, it's just me rambling. I like to ramble.)

What I like is dry humor. Wit. Puns. Things that make me roll my eyes or slap my knees. Humor that pokes a hole in the fourth wall. Brick jokes that tie everything together.

There would have been a time, early in my fanfiction career, when I would have said I didn't like humor fics. And by and large, my tastes haven't really changed. So what did? My vocabulary. "Humor," as an FFN genre, became conflated for me with a certain type of crack-fic; adventures of pranksters for pranking's sake. The adventures of the Weasley twins or the Marauders of Harry Potter made me wary--I don't want to read a story where nothing happens except some people playing tricks on others. Similarly crack-fics, where characters are just running around on sugar highs, I really don't like tricks that rely on sort of physical, sensory descriptions of humor--X tricks Y into touching some icky gross substance is definitely a squick for me, I'll backbutton out of that kind of thing.

For reference; here's a list of summaries from literally all the English-language Animorphs fanfiction sorted "humor" on FFN posted during one time period in early 2006 (I joined in late December, 2005).

"okay, so ive decided to turn this into a story! what happens when you wake up and things... aren't how you left them? A FUNNY READ OR SO IVE BEEN TOLD!AND YES! UPDATED! PRAISE ME!"
"The Animorphs get sucked into Fuedal Japan with Inuyasha and Co. Now they have to stop Naraku who has gone to the future and teamed with Visser 3!"
"Chappie 1 O.K Second shot at an Animorph fic. This ones kindof wierd......It is about a Vampire and Andalite. Tragety comes later. Lots of death! :D"
"One Shot.Jake & the Animorphs go to the mall but have an unfortunate encounter with the police. Please R&R.My first fanfic. Please don't flame constructive critism is gratly appreaciated.Thanks."
"I havent updated for a long time, and i'm sorry, so to mae it up to you, I uploaded the rest of the story! :D"

Can you perhaps guess why this genre didn't "take" for me?

In the fandoms where I'm currently active, either this kind of fic isn't as popular, or I'm not browsing in the right places to tune it off. There's still, however, a long list of places where I don't enjoy humor--it's the same as places where I don't enjoy any plot device. Humor relying on the false premise that everyone in a certain demographic or certain scenario has the same principles and the same worldview can make me freeze up and uncomfortably silent. Humor that assumes everyone has the same motivations and goals in life. That relies on identity politics to belittle or to stereotype, regardless of whether you're picking on a majority or a minority group.

And yet I love my wordplay; I love clever characters like Lee Jordan (who I really started loving after realizing how much he had in common with another jokester, Marco from Animorphs), I love bits of potty humor thrown into a story whose author is too right-wing to speak for me in every regard, I love fourth-wall-busting winks thrown into a story whose author is too left-wing to speak for me in every regard (and I still enjoy both of those stories without having to agree politically with everything they say), I love blink-and-you'll-miss-it nerdy one-liners and stealth continuity nods. And when I have to ask for something in my exchanges, well--I don't want sex, I don't want implausible and unconvincing romance, I don't want you showing off how pretentious and deeper than the original author you are, I don't want a crossover with a fandom I don't care about, I want...I don't know. "Humor." Whatever that means.

I want to focus.

I want to have enough time for the writing online, fannish, roleplaying, and otherwise, that I enjoy. I want to be able to succeed IRL, too.

Sometimes, I believe I have enough time to do it all.

Sometimes I'm afraid.

I need to step back. I need to stop "watching trainwrecks," as they say. I need to stop wasting time in communities and subsites where I'm not happy, where I'm not going to be happy, where I know I'm not wanted. Where I can guess I'm not wanted. Even if I'm guessing wrong, the fear doesn't make it worthwhile.

It's a slow process, of focusing and not winding up distracted and wasting time. But I have to start somewhere.
primeideal: Multicolored sideways eight (infinity sign) (Default)
(A lot of this might show up in comments to replies, I thought I'd put the whole long ramble here in case people specifically cared about the thought process behind the fic.)

It's Reveals Time at HP Friendship, which means I get to take credit for "Before Peace"! (Also on Ao3 and FFN.) This is a fic centered on the Ravenclaws in Dumbledore's Army during the year of book seven. As a self-declared (and other tests-declared) Ravenclaw, and a big fan of anything that explores the Hogwarts resistance, this was the perfect prompt for me.

It's a forty-minute podfic from Lee Jordan's show--he's one of my favorites, so it was a pleasure to get to write the song lyrics that appear as between-segment transitions. :) The music turned out really well!

I like "documentation" fic, imagining the actual contents of some famous--or in this case, infamous--fictional documents. So it was very cool to find something like that which worked for the podfic format, too!

And finally, The Fic That Ate My Brain. Written for the "Summer of Slaves" fest at HP Owned...

Ingenious Virtue (1169 words) by primeideal
Chapters: 2/27
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling

Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Percy Weasley/Oliver Wood
Characters: Percy Weasley, Oliver Wood, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Minor character ensemble
Additional Tags: Gladiators, Alternate Universe - Gladiators, Alternate Universe - Slavery

Consigned from the life of a slave to fighting in vicious bloodsports, Percy Weasley has no idea what lies in wait. Everything from a surprising family reunion to a mysterious old book brings a change from the normal routines of slavery, but perhaps it's Oliver Wood who has the most to teach him about life, death, and everything in between.

I wasn't immediately into the premise of slavery-themed fic (and actually still don't get most of the subgenre, but that's another story). However, when I tried to imagine how a gladiatorial plot would work out with some of the characters I'm into....well it ate my brain. It'll update weekly on Ao3 and FFN, for a total of, um, 45k words. (Original link is here.)

Also, the Wikipedia research on this was addictive.

So, there's that. If I find time, because I'm procrastinating, I might write up some other random stuff or link to other stuff I've done offsite in the coming days, from lurking other journals I guess there's an interest in more fannish blogging? But my fannish interests change so quickly (I've really fallen hard for all continuities of "Battle Royale," of all things, which I don't think this journal has properly appreciated yet) that I'm not sure there's any kind of an audience, heh.
primeideal: Text: "Right, the colors. Whoa! Go away! We're trying to figure out the space-time continuum here." on Ravenclaw banner (ravenclaw)
There once was a young little kook
Who liked to read many a book.
For hour after hour,
And now I'll devour
Up any which fic you can cook!

(That is to say, write any which fic you'd like--if it means something to you, I'll love it! These are just more optional details.)

Things I like: happy endings, or sad endings sometimes. Friendship, humor (especially verbal or dry, less so slapstick).

I do not like ambiguous endings, issue-fic, bashing of these characters or the fandoms themselves, explicit sex, or rape/non-con, thanks! I'm fine with both gen and ship-fic, though some of these characters are more given to shipping than others. (In general I'd prefer no wildly non-canon pairings for these fandoms.)

(Edit: for all of these I said "General" or "Teen" audiences, that's pretty generic, I guess. I'm fine with graphically violent content, if you think the fic calls for it--can't really see it for Will Grayson, BSC, or Phantom Tollbooth, though feel free to surprise me!)

I would love fic for any of these fandoms equally; given the differences between some of the characters, I have more to say about some fandoms than others in order to touch on most of the different characters represented here.

Request: Any nominated character (Mariel, Dandin, Russano, Buckler)
"Anything about the nominated characters! (Not all at once, obviously.) For Mariel or Dandin, I'd love to see something post-canon, maybe bringing closure to their story. I could read them as friends or lovers, whichever works for you. Any era goes for Russano or Buckler, whether that's set at Salamandastron with Russano's family, or a young Buckler resenting the military life! If none of these characters work for you, maybe something humorous with OCs?"

If you're in this fandom, you may know me as Ember Nickel.

For Mariel and/or Dandin, I'd really like something not left open-ended for them--whether that's retiring to the Abbey, or someone reporting on their legends after their deaths at a ripe old age. (Or maybe one of them tragically dies for the other in battle? This could work as either gen or shippy, I guess.)

Russano has a canon family (wife and children), so I'd rather not see him paired with OCs, but you can flesh them out in whatever way suits your fancy. Maybe how he deals with interpreting prophecies on the walls? Or trying to provide more non-violent opportunities to the Salamandastron hares?

I love the idea of Buckler, the hare who doesn't really care about what-whating and military culture, and his dramatic confrontation with Zwilt was a great look at different kinds of heroism. Maybe more of him and his sister-and-law or niece and nephew, afterwards? Or him being the straight man (hare?) to Diggs' antics.

If you don't really like any of these characters, I'd love to see something funny, maybe poking fun at the premise while still not trashing the fandom. (Like, how do all these questers find all these secret rooms, without running across the things that are hidden for the next generation of investigators?)

Series of Unfortunate Events

Request: Violet Baudelaire, Klaus Baudelaire, Duncan Quagmire, Isadora Quagmire, Quigley Quagmire
"I would love to see some future fic with a genuine, unambiguous, happy ending--or, if not ending, narratively compelling stopping point--for the Baudelaire kids. The implied ships with the Quagmires, for Violet and Klaus are fine with me, if you'd like to include them, but gen is also welcome. I love humor, especially for this fandom, but it's not mandatory. If you'd rather do a different era, maybe cute scenes earlier in the Baudelaires' or Quagmires' lives? (I didn't request Sunny but for a gen, sibling fic would be more than happy to see her included as well; don't force it if she won't fit, though!) Feel free to weave in Snicket-esque definitions, sidetracks, and/or red herrings."

My real big request in this fandom is to please, please not go too far down the road into pretentiousness, post-earnestness, "I'm more mature than you so I'm going to leave things open Because That's How Intellectuals In This Century Think" or anything like that. The last few books really disappointed me in that regard, and I recognize this might be phrased kind of awkwardly, so if you're unsure, err on the side of a boring and straightforward plot.

That said, I adored the humor of the earlier books, and would love to see anything riffing on those themes! Feel free to break through the fourth wall if you'd like to go off on "a word which here means..." tangents, translate for Sunny, anything like that! A happy ending would be great, making fun of the fact that you're giving people happy endings would be fun. Or, if you want to kill everybody off, that could definitely be hilarious too! As long as you have fun with it.

Will Grayson Will Grayson
Request: Will Grayson (John Green/uppercase), Will Grayson (David Levithan/lowercase), Tiny Cooper, Jane
"This book delighted me and I'm sure I'd love any direction you choose to take it. My memory of Gideon isn't the strongest so I'd rather not see a lot of focus on him, but if you'd like to include him in an ensemble fic that would certainly be all right with me. Making fun of musical theater plots?"

Some completely optional details that would make me squee would be anything specifically referencing the Chicagoland settings. Maura was not requested, but if you'd like to write about her and lowercase Will, I'd be happy with that--I thought the story was a surprisingly realistic take on the importance online relationships can have to us. Another random plot bunny would be lowercase Will (perhaps influenced by any of his friends you choose) making amends to the math team (anything involving math competitions will definitely make me squee).

Canon ships here are fine with me, so if you're in the mood for writing Uppercase Will/Jane, or Tiny/Will Three, that's great! I'd rather not have a focus on sex, though. And, while I'm definitely into non-ship fic, if Will Three doesn't serve much of a purpose beyond being someone else to break up with Tiny I'd rather not see him.

Baby-Sitters Club
Request: Kristy Thomas, Mary Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill, Dawn Schafer, Mallory Pike, Jessi Ramsey, Abby Stevenson
"I've requested any of the main sitters (if for some reason you'd like to include Logan or Shannon, that's fine, but I'm not interested in their other nominated classmates). Fun reunion-era fic would be fun, please not too much emphasis on non-canon pairings if you go that route. Any sort of missing scenes during the main timespan of the books would be entertaining, and if you like humor, I feel like this would be a fun fandom to do dry humor with. (Or crossovers with other small fandoms?)"

I didn't read most of the Friends Forever books, so I'd rather not rely on the background pairings introduced there. I'd prefer to see Mary Anne/Logan, Mallory/Ben, or Kristy/Bart if you'd really like to do something shippy, and please no non-canon ships. Among the other fandoms for this exchange I'm most interested in (besides those listed here) are L'Engle's Time Quintet series (Murrys and O'Keefes), Ender's Game, Harry Potter, and Summerland, which I recognize aren't great with the place and time setting, but if you want to do something really off-the-wall I'm sure I'd be up for it. Stacey's math skills, Kristy's sports obsessions, and Mallory's love of writing were the subplots that most interested me, but I'd be happy to see something about any of the other characters too. Kristy in the last book, recognizing that the others have changed more than her while she's very much the same person she was at the beginning of the series, is also someone who really resonates with me--I think if you wanted to push the fourth wall for whatever reason this might be a good place to do it, but I'd rather not have a message of "it's good for everyone to mature and really change their priorities."

The Phantom Tollbooth
Request: Any character.
"Anything goes! The adventures of the other characters, after Milo's departure? Or maybe he finds a magical gateway into other realms, or later in life uses some mad science and/or mad literary skills to burrow his way back into the Phantom-esque lands? I'm a sucker for nerdy humor on pretty much any level. In addition, if you happen to know the movie-verse, I remember really enjoying that adaptation, although I'm fuzzy on the details (beyond the music! "Henceforth and forthwith..."), so allusions to that would be entertaining but certainly not required. More optional details at letter."

The bad news is I don't remember this fandom in the best detail, so I can't single out something I really want to see. The good news is pretty much anything relying on dorky humor will have my utmost admiration! Short Shrift was not nominated, but I remember enjoying him as a great antagonist, so if you'd like to include him impeding the course of justice he'd be a welcome surprise. Or any other non-nominated (or movie?) character you'd like to throw in.
As above, no need to be wedded to this--write whatever you'd like, and I'm looking forward to it already! :)

In his proposals for the Turing Test, Alan Turing suggested that a computer respondent should be able to answer--or deflect--questions like "Please write me a sonnet on the subject of the Forth Bridge."

The Forth Bridge was originally going to be designed by Thomas Bouch, but he lost favor after his Tay Bridge collapsed.

The Tay Bridge is memorialized in poetry. "The Tay Bridge Disaster" was written by one of the worst poets in history, William McGonagall. Minerva McGonagall is named after him.

"Things fall to Earth because of the law of gravity."
"What did we do before the law was passed?"
Hey everyone! This is Ember Nickel (primeideal), longtime fan and occasional author of fanfic. A few months ago, I completed a long series reread of Animorphs, jotting down things that caught my eye along the way. Starting around book 9 (and Megamorphs 1), I noticed a couple patterns of things I'd like to discuss further. Here, I'll be talking about more of the "science" side of "science fiction." So the intro-y stuff will be a biology refresher course, and then it'll be onto the fandom aspects! (Feel free to skim.)
For those of you who do know more about biology than me, I'm sorry if I've egregiously misrepresented any of the details. I'm also sorry if I'm quibbling about something that annoys me more than it annoys you, but I had to get this out there.

HP Rare Fest starts posting today, and I need to get cracking on Owned and Friendship as well! Just completed a big RL workload/era of my life, so it's party times for the next...week-plus. Hopefully I can fit in some writing as well, but worst-case scenario is all-out party times which shouldn't be so bad. :)

I found a secret room today
(I wish you'd come along.)
The doors had had nothing to say
(So how could I be wrong?)
I saw poles climb to reach the roof
They formed a shining line:
And if you ask me for some proof
I photographed a sign.
It might be somewhat hard to read,
But I know what it said.
You go and find it, if you need
To find out how it read.
I've read about explorers who
Would all make me quite jealous.
Whether they went by one or two,
They all came back to tell us.
I'm one of them now! I returned.
The door through which I came
Was not to be opened, I learned
--And things aren't quite the same.

A thought

Without going into details, there's a certain, shall we say, political issue of the day on which many of my peers take position A. Given various parts of my worldview and ethical standards--call those X--together with some of the similar political opinions I share with my peers, I, too, tend towards position A. Many other people happen to hold position B, which is (when suitably defined, essentially) incompatible with A, and so, debates between A and B tend to dominate the discourse.

Journalists covering this debate will tend to say things like "well, a lot of people (like my peers) are supporting A, but then, there are also a lot of people supporting B! People supporting A cite reasons such as Y, whereas people supporting B cite reasons such as X. It's an exciting debate! Tune in next time for more from our hard-hitting sources!"

When I'm sitting here going A, to some extent because of X.  I might as well not exist to these people and that...disappoints me.

But! This is my breakthrough thought. I always thought people like me (and I am far from alone) who follow X to arrive at A are just too...uncool or invisible to the media. However, maybe it's just that the media is afraid of pointing out the X->As, because if you accept that X doesn't necessarily support B, then B has basically nothing to stand on. And the contemporary media faces a pressure to be somewhat "balanced" when covering different factions (false equivalencies...this has come up with, say, Republicans being less willing to compromise than Democrats in budget negotiations, but no one wants to admit it because "the Republicans are unhelpful and the Democrats are at least making an effort" is no fun).

So, as my existence demonstrates, the Bs' argument is incoherent. And they are losing. Whether or not anyone knows I exist, we are at least moving in the right direction.

"In this class," says Longbottom, distantly, thinking back to old cauldrons, "you won't find much call for wand-waving. But, that said, you don't know how or if a straightforward incantation might aid you. Think of Lumos. It's just about your first charm to cast. Or, shall I put it, my first."

That was what scholars didn't think so much about. That fight, staring down Nagini, burning in Hogwarts' old Sorting Hat and finding Godric Gryffindor's sword, looking at Harry's body--was how dark it all was. A silly occasion for a war fought by young warriors, and still a day worth honoring.

I had to include the "he asked" tag in the first one to meet the three-sentence limit in the three-sentence ficathon, and so that forced my hand for the "he asked" later on as well. (I only included the first of the three-sentence fics.)
I like present tense for Les Miz. I think I already knew that.
I really like the range of fandoms here, in general. Hmm, maybe I should sign up for "not prime time" after all?
I also like how I have to use line in the literal sense because there are so many poetic things eventually.
The "the planet of Earth" one is a relatively bleak and not-that-funny beginning given the nature of the rest of the story.
Considered on their own, the third of these just might be my favorite.
