Farscape live-ish blog: Season 2, Episodes 4-6
Thanks for all the feedback on the conlang stuff! I don't think I really want to go whole hog on conlang purposes for this fic, but that's always an option. :D
The way I do these notes is I type stuff on my phone as I go, and then every few episodes write them up in complete sentences. So sometimes I will find myself not remembering what exactly something was a reference too. IDK, hope it's amusing for you guys. :P
Is there supposed to be graffiti on the walls? It looks kind of like weird alien letters in a couple places.
Zhaan: I like the pulsar light :D John and D'Argo: Here we go again
Rygel eats (and defecates) his body weight twice a day, really?
The alternating pitch music (close intervals) isn't really evocative of anything but it's catchy, I've found myself earwormed by it even when not watching the show.
Aeryn makes a barricade.
"I never run away! I...strategically maneuver." -Rygel :)
"Is this the French Revolution?" -John notices the same tropes I do
"The only thing you've ever assaulted is a plate of food cubes." -Aeryn to Rygel
Aeryn seems to be the reasonable one here (I forget which point this refers to, but this may not be saying much.)
D'Argo was bleeding before and now he's fine?
John spells the guy's name with a fantasy apostrophe, haha. It's silly enough when the subtitles do it but this kind of lampshades it.
Between this and the mad science lab rat...at the risk of being too identity-political, I would kind of like to see what life is like for a physically disabled character (by alien standards) who's a basically decent person and just trying to live their life.
I feel like the paranoia plot is more interesting when we're not sure if it's real. Early on when people were getting weirdly defensive over crackers, it's like, "is this the pulsar or is this just what happens after months of getting on each other's nerves? Self-fulfilling prophecy?" But when John is seeing Scorpius or insulting Chiana's sex life, it's like, okay, nobody here is themselves. (And that's kind of boring.)
Peacekeepers believe in some version of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis when it comes to pilots.
Crais' ponytail exists in the flashbacks, so maybe he had it in S1 and I wasn't looking.
Aeryn: Let's talk about romance. John: uhhhhh
When Chiana was on the secret base last season, the officers were like "the sex ratio is 5 to 1 out here, you are a sight for sore eyes." Is something similar going on with Aeryn and Velorek? Like, "you're the only single woman in this platoon so let's bang?"
The flashbacks with him pulling her into the room, and the ranks, make me worried that she wasn't really able to give informed consent. :/ But maybe she just doesn't want to talk about the memory.
Do pilots have names? Like, there was "Lady Pilot" (per the subtitles) and now "our" Pilot.
The music is a lot more dramatic/melodically interesting here.
Zhaan has a different blue necklace. Nice.
"You can be so much more" - Velorek to Aeryn. I'm not sure I would have caught the significance of that line if it hadn't been for reading all the post-S1 fic, so score one for real-time ficcing!
Moya and Pilot were linked by a torture collar for two years or so, and she's been free for about a year. Has he been in pain all this time? And why would he only break free now?
"The pain is finally gone" oh no
I wrote in my notes "Zhaan concurs." I am not sure what she's concurring with, maybe the "oh no."
The secret project is...Velorek sabotaged Crais' breeding program?!
Rock paper scissors callback!
"Contact Teeg for a promotion" --Crais. Nice continuity nod also.
Okay, yes, there was a reason for that conception tech. Eeeesh. Velorek tries to undermine Crais because he's a Peacekeeper with a heart beyond just following orders, and Moya's crew just assumes "anything peacekeeper tech is bad." Which, I'm very happy from a plotting standpoint that this was brought up and resolved, because it doesn't really make sense otherwise. That was a question I wanted answered. But at the same time, :( that makes Crais' possessiveness about Talyn even creepier. (Hopefully they will actually get to, like, talk about this.)
Pilot's home planet with the aurora is beautiful.
And yeah, Velorek is a complex character, he's trying to be as "humane" as possible to the aliens but it doesn't really do him, or them, any good. :(
"It could take a year to make a real bond and it'll be more tenuous than before." -Pilot Sir, you had a baby developing inside your ship for the last several months and that caused all sorts of mishaps, I don't think things could possibly more tenuous as far as the crew's well-being is concerned.
But there's no pain :)
I've complained that we don't really hear much from Pilot and Moya as individual characters. Is that because they were being tortured/in pain for years? Maybe they'll actually talk to us now that they're "healthy"?
John: "Okay, so back to the important things, like Aeryn's love life."
Aeryn: "Hey, that symbolic line he said was the same thing you said to me."
John: "Yeah, and you loved him, so..."
When Aeryn storms into Pilot's room and demanding answers, John is like "You don't have to blame yourself"/"I'm not." I can relate to that, kind of--like, I'm not saying it's necessarily my fault, I just feel like it's something's fault! Nice characterization.
"Don't shoot, it's me!" "I think that's enough reason to pull the trigger." -Rygel and Aeryn
"It's been an honor to know you" "Shut. Up." -D'Argo and John
The polyhedra space station is neat.
Evil wizard redux! The tagline (something about "Zhaan spots an old enemy") made me wonder if Maldis would be involved, because this doesn't feel like a Peacekeeper move. But still cool to confirm.
And now we're probably going to get evil Zhaan again.
The weird non-Euclidean space inside the portrait is a lot like the realm of the Finn from Wheel of Time!
New accessory from Zhaan: gold arm gauntlets. I don't even do cosplay but I would cosplay as Zhaan for that blue and gold swag.
"These are a few of my favorite things." "Great, do 'So Long, Farewell' next." As I wrote this on the phone I realized it works on multiple levels, John specifically wants Maldis to beat it!
"He sucks the life force out of everybody." "Mostly he just sucks." -D'Argo and John
"Picture if you will..." Title drop. I guess this is a Twilight Zone thing? Before my time.
Chiana gets an infodump summary.
"But why my leg?" Maybe just a self-fulfilling prophecy?
Zhaan is willing to be deceptive to beat Maldis even though it's against her religion. Or she really was that afraid...
