"Building relationships" is a good point--my extended family does a lot of this, and it seems to be a subcategory of "sharing strong emotions and commiserating with each other, as a way to build relationships." Which to me often comes across as "dumping problems on other people for the sake of making them upset," and it's like...is this helping? What is constructive about this.
