Wheel of Time episode 2: Shadow's Waiting
In which we go to the spooky cursed city and do spooky cursed things.
-About Perrin and Leila. I'd seen some meta/headcanons around before the show about "Perrin probably was the big guy in his age-group who would injure the small children without trying and feel bad about it," so I wasn't too surprised that they went there, although I wasn't completely sure that was what was happening in the moment. But more interesting than Perrin feeling terrible about being unable to control his strength and the consequences is thinking about it from Moiraine and Lan's point of view. Like, when they find out that he accidentally couldn't control his own strength and killed his wife in a berserker rage...he is going to be the #1 candidate for Lews Therin "Kinslayer" Telamon reborn, right??
-Whitecloak tents! With all their scenery and swag and elegant decorations and being super orderly even when the world is in chaos. I didn't really think we would get Whitecloaks this early (maybe a Galad cameo??) but I am here for this worldbuilding.
-Aaaand they're here to burn a witch at the stake. Yikes.
-Would this even work? In Harry Potter there's the thing about "Muggles tried to burn witches, but witches would just escape, they're magic, and the Muggles wound up just burning each other instead, which is terrible." And I feel like an Aes Sedai should be able to get out of this with the One Power (the Third Oath exception applies?) and maybe the Whitecloaks are just burning innocent bystanders, which is also horrific. (Moiraine says later that those were other Aes Sedai rings, so no, somehow they got thwarted.)
-I like the opening sequence, making a tapestry representing the seven Ajahs. But we didn't need that in the first episode?
-The Trollocs are just completely stymied by the river. If only Narg were there to teach them how to shoot an arrow or something. Narg smart.
-And where are they going to go once the ferry leaves? Just go bother the people on this side of the river?
-The ferry scene is yikes. In the book, Nynaeve was around to yell at Moiraine for her callousness, but even without her it gets even worse with "what about my son" and then he just dives in as it's going into the whirlpool, eeeesh. And then Moiraine is just like "we gotta hurry up." I do enjoy Moiraine as a character but both versions of this scene are good reminders that she can be very unsympathetic at times.
-The Three Oaths were related to Hawkwing's wars? I know the Oath Rod purpose has changed since the Age of Legends but I don't know when exactly they were introduced. (Poking around, it looks like maybe slightly before Hawkwing's time but after the Trolloc Wars.) Hope this is some foreshadowing for more Hawkwing content later.
-"You already did" oooof, Rand.
-Egwene debriefs the Whitecloak bluffing scene and we get a good overview of what the First Oath doesn't do.
-The kids have a Manetheren song!
-But they don't know what it's about, haha, welp.
-I like Moiraine narrating the story, but just cutting between everyone's faces as she relays this is not very interesting visually. (The graphic novel did this well, actually, there was a slightly different font stylization for the "flashback" scenes. Of course, the graphic novel only got through about half of book 1/14 afaik, so.)
-The music in the scene with the wolves is more my style, is this gonna be a "Wolfbrother" motif? Because I would be here for that.*
-"Hyah!" *kicks horse* is about 50% of Lan's dialogue
-The creepy Shadar Logoth architecture is A+. That weird fracture thing outside? The arches and windows and stuff? Yes please.
-Lan's Aridhol story parallels Moiraine's Manetheren one. Except there's a lot more interesting scenery to look at this time.
-"That's more words than you've said all day, probably ever," hahaha Perrin tells it like it is.
-Mat is in Shadar Logoth and he's giving away a special dagger, what a twist!
-And that end! Love it.
