Life imitates art
Cut for a brief discussion of the ongoing pandemic thing.
I hope we're giving Connie Willis ("Doomsday Book") plenty of credit for illustrating that, if you have to live through a pandemic, the 21st century is better than the 14th century in terms of having access to modern medicine/technology/health care. But when it comes to human nature/blaming out-groups/chaos and mass hysteria, we're not that far ahead of our 14th century counterparts.
But I really want to give her credit for illustrating how life kinda goes on amid the pandemic. The change ringers! "Yeah everything is bleeped and there's no chance I can get to a tower to practice ringing heavy bells, I know, I'll just log onto the 'nets' and practice the patterns with other people. Because you know the British nerds are going to be making virtual ringing rooms when they can't get together in person." -me IRL, 2020, probably.
Hopefully I get to "meet" her at Capclave and can rave about this!
