I was, as the kids say, knitting my taxes with the help of a popular online program. Especially in the state section, there are some weird questions that don't apply to 95% of people but you should look over them just to be sure. For instance, federal and state policies may be different when it comes to earnings from Olympic medals. And then, separate from the main charitable deductions section, there's a "donations to certain charities" section that was very delicately phrased:
A person who makes a donation of certain disposable diapers, certain hygiene products, or certain monetary gifts to a qualified diaper bank or charitable entity is eligible for a subtraction. The maximum value of the subtraction modification is equal to $1,000 of the qualified donation made by a person.

If you bought new aquaculture floats to grow oysters under a pier at your home, you could receive a tax break worth up to $500 for the cost of the float. Even better, if you're filing a return jointly with your spouse, you can each claim a $500 credit.
