Apr. 30th, 2019 02:37 pmToday I spent a lot of waiting around in an office lobby where I couldn't use my cell phone. Techy people being interviewed in and out. There were a few books available.
90% of which was programming textbooks, and one of which was The Silmarillion.
As someone who tried to read LotR many years ago and didn't really get into it, the most interesting part was seeing where a bunch of my less-creative acquaintances' usernames/RPG settings were obviously plagiarized from. Tolkien's "hmmm I'm gonna invent a language now, let's see what I can do with it" is a man after my own heart, but then why does he bother with like...the plot...and characters if that's not his thing.
The religious/afterlife stuff is interesting, but so far the running theme seems to be "humans die, their fate is a mystery. Elves are different, because they are different." (I only got about a third of the way through the book, but I've osmosed that they're going to intermarry and that will create problems.) I think if I invent any cosmologies all the sentient species will have the same ultimate teleology, seems like the fair thing to do.
I don't expect to finish, except for the fairly likely event I'm called back to redo the interview, in which case...well I'm a completionist so who knows.
