Fandom: Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Verin Mathwin, Ingtar (Wheel of Time)
Additional Tags: Portal Stones, Multiple Alternate Universes, 5+5 Things, Book 2: The Great Hunt
Summary: Verin and Ingtar pass through the Portal Stones.
(Set during book 2 but contains spoilers for book 12, on the chance anyone here is concerned about such things?)
The Dragon Reborn:
-Faile shows up (400 pages) into this book. I would have guessed she appeared earlier, maybe because the last book was called "The Great Hunt" and I associate her with...being a Hunter.
-Egwene's early impression of Faolain is "she's a jerk she'll probably choose the Red Ajah." Well...not so fast.
-Siuan has a poignant aside on the culture of Tear and their attitudes towards channelling. Poignant because, well, she's a fisher from Tear.
-Bain and Chiad talk about how they wanted more than their "wedding pledge" to keep them from being separated by tribal feuds, and I was like what did they get married to each other?? But no, they just meant the vows Maidens take to be "wedded to the spear." :(
-The Aiel show up here (obviously) but there's nothing about ji'e'toh, I wonder if Jordan hadn't fleshed that out yet.
-In the scene where Rand kind of snaps and kills a bunch of (probably evil) people by his campsite, one of them is a woman, and he just...doesn't care about it? I've seen interpretations of that scene like "Jordan didn't know the series would take so long, the madness was probably starting early," but...hm. Or maybe we're supposed to take his lack of reaction to killing a woman as proof of madness, siiiiiigh.
-Then again he did want the series to take...some time.
-There's a lot of foreshadowing about balefire, presumably leading up to Moiraine backhanding Be'lal at the end, but also in association with Egwene. Which is interesting given later developments. (When did Moiraine take a level in forbidden magic? She just says ominously "I can do forbidden things now," did she pick that up from Vandene and Adeleas?)
If I do fic for this it'll probably be cracky Faile and Loial friendship. Or maybe Moiraine taking a level in forbidden magic. Probably going to do another burst of Yuletide treating first, though, if I have the energy!
