Huuhhhh, interesting. I'd seen that social media critique and had never really thought about it, but... the reason I don't do tumblr any more is that a lot of people over there seem to share a lot of gloom and doom, often about the world / from third parties, sometimes about their personal lives. Which... as you say, when I'm friends with someone of course I want to know about both their successes and their troubles! But when it's just all gloom and doom I just don't want to deal with it all the time. I suppose I have that with DW, too, but to much less of an extent since I tend to self-select for people who have interesting conversations about books and ideas and fandom and so on in addition to other things.
(And of course it depends. I'm willing to put up with a lot of stuff from my sister who is going through a chronic illness and all the awfulness dependent on that, because she's my sister and I've literally known her her whole life. Internet acquaintance I met last month and interacted with twice in a fandom context gets rather less leeway on that. And everywhere in between.)
Facebook just gets overwhelming for me with People things, I think. It doesn't bring me down like tumblr, I like hearing about people's lives! But I do tend to hang out on DW more than on FB. I wonder a bit whether it's easier for me to deal with people who only exist to me as pixels than as actual RL people. Hmm.
/not diagnosed but almost certainly at least mildly on the spectrum
