I did find some fic--big theme is John/Aeryn making each other better and choosing each other over anything else, d'aww. Lots of longfic, too. Pretty surreal to go down the time capsule to 1999-era FFN. Like, this fic is not well-written and the prose is distracting, but the premise (why are humans and Sebaceans so similar?) is neat and not something I'd considered before. And it's one of the first 500 stories ever posted to the site!
Anyway, I might have a real rec later as part of a longer post that includes S2 stuff, but for now, moving on.
(Content note: Episode 3 deals a lot with suicidal behavior.)
So we ended Season 1 on a cliffhanger with John and D'Argo drifting in the void, and Aeryn looking for a window to swoop in and pick them up. Moya had starbursted away, and Crais had kidnapped Talyn. This just picks up "several days later, Aeryn managed to rescue John and D'Argo, and they're on a hidden asteroid somewhere." Again, I gotta say, this particular start is a bit info-dumpy.
"I would rather go down on a swing." "...Swinging."
And Moya just backtracks to find Talyn. Yeah, this is kind of lazy.
Crais tries to convince Talyn that Moya has abandoned him, presumably so he'll switch loyalties to Crais. "I know you want to fight but you are just a baby."
"How many times have we been close?" "Uh. Once?" "Not like that." John and Aeryn.
Crais is now on the phone with Scorpius, trying to play both sides. Does Scorpius even believe any of this? Does Crais?
Also is Crais' ponytail new? Because I'm a fan, just saying.
"May your afterlife be almost as pleasant as mine." Rygel to Chiana.
Chiana is so happy to see John that she can fly! ("They fly now? They fly now," I think the meme goes.)
But Zhaan is out of it, which gives Chiana a chance to step up and be in charge.
Zhaan does some metaphysical bell ringing.
Sometimes John's earthling cultural allusions go over the head of even me; the Menendez brothers were convicted for killing their parents. (This might have been more relevant in 2000.)
Aeryn joining Crais to watch over Talyn actually seems like a good plan? Kudos for coming up with a good plan.
Okay, I'd heard Crais' and Talyn's relationship described as pseudo-parental and/or pseudo-romantic, but "nephew"??? Is that just "the Peacekeeper side of Talyn is Crais' brother, all Peacekeepers are bros?" (What does that make Aeryn.)
The "hand of friendship" is actually a brain link, wow.
Crais takes credit for killing Crichton. To protect Aeryn? But Scorpius doesn't buy it.
Talyn calls back to tell Moya this is his choice, which is nice--we get more actual "ships are their own people and can make their own decisions" here than I feel like we got for most of S1! But how much of that stems from Crais trying to pit him against Moya earlier?
Also based on the tagline I thought we'd get to at least see a scene (or more) of Aeryn desperately negotiating with Crais the first time, with the in medias res stuff it feels like it's just handwaved as "oh we had a 'deal,' if you know what I mean." Is there fic? :D
(I'll be patient, it's only episode 1...)
Turquoise necklace on blue is a bold color choice for Zhaan. I like blue! I'm just saying, bold.
"Holy women never go bad?"
Rygel with a weird pink striped polo shirt.
How can he survive half-spaced? Like I get that Luxans have different vacuum tolerance but this feels unfeasible, just a setup for potty humor.
"I came here to end this" sounds over-the-top. Is that a trope phrase from another show? Feels like it's a quote from a melodramatic scene with a more established character.
Chiana cutting herself open, yikes. Setting up the self-harm and/or body modification plotlines?
Were they able to trace Aeryn's Prowler? Feels lucky that they just happened to get where Chiana was.
There are creepy-crawlies decomposing the corpse :( but Rygel's just like "Snacktime!"
John plays Russian Roulette with an alien when he's out there chiding Chiana for being reckless? Seems OOC. (I would have enjoyed it if it was something like "he assumed I was Sebacean but these don't work on humans," but no.)
John is now hungover and wants Excedrin, my migraines can relate :(
They're theorizing about how the radiation levels work. What if it has something to do with "this level wouldn't be dangerous for adults, but if you're exposed in utero, will permanently mutate you"? Would tie into the transparent abdomens.
The Das thing doesn't make sense, why would he have jumped if he knew the outside was safer?
Yes, let Chiana talk about her brother, this is good.
Really don't like the ending of "John lets her go through with facing her courage test and she nails it." Like, having your cake and eating it too! I appreciated Aeryn's perspective of "forcibly stopping her from doing anything is only going to make matters worse, you have to give her space to make her own choices." And "just because you tell people the truth and let them vote doesn't mean they're going to make wise election decisions." But the switch from "please do not harm yourself, it is bad" to "yay, you did it, good job!" didn't work for me.
I've been discussing Farscape in a couple other places and people have been like "it can be slow to get going, but it's going to get better and better!" And like...I didn't think S1 was particularly slow. Even though it wasn't the aspect I'd osmosed, the John-and-Aeryn fish out of water dynamics grabbed me right away and good character development continued throughout the season. 2.2 felt like it could have been a standalone that would fit almost anywhere in last season: D'Argo meets another Luxan, wants to connect with her to see his son again, but ultimately realizes that Moya and his friends there come first.
This episode felt like a step back. Like, the backstory of the planet is "it's radiation and people get horrifically mutated at age 22, so let's jump off cliffs"? That's it? And Chiana ultimately like "I don't want to harm myself, I just wanna jump off the cliff to prove myself," and John's response is "okay fine"? Maybe I've calibrated my expectations too high based on the feedback of "it's even better after the standalone part of S1," but this is the kind of thing that would have made me less interested in S1. I'm sticking with it, though!
