Happy 300th birthday to Christopher Smart, ahead-of-his-time poet who had a lot of feelings about his cat. (And Christianity and 1700s science!)
I saw "born 1722" and was like "22, that's a round number anniversary, 17, that's 22-5, so 500 years old!" I Am A Serious Mathematician Who Does Math Good, Guys.
Also, you've heard of "lying about your age to get into the military," now get ready for "rounding your age down to join the military." Frank Worsley of the Endurance! Antarctica guys continue to be The Most Extra.
The other day I got a short story rejected from a market that seems RTMI and I've tried (and failed) several times to submit to. Shouldn't be a big deal, but I was feeling bummed out, I guess because I feel like that story combined a couple ideas I've been playing around with a while and if it doesn't fit there, it's probably not going to fit anywhere.
And then there's this other market that at times has intriguing prompts but is always late at announcing them, so why do I even expect them to be timely, I don't know. Anyway, after the usual delay, they announced their new prompt, and like...very clearly what they want is a kind of self-satisfied sanctimoniousness that is popular in certain lefty sectors but is way too simplistic if you try to use it as a framework for understanding a variety of RL politics issues. And that isn't unique to them, it's common in a lot of the circles I kinda-sorta-don't really admire. It's like...I understand that the kind of stuff I'm interested in writing isn't going to be a good fit for all people, or most people, but on the off chance there are people it would be a good fit for, I wish it would be easier to find them.
Ignore me, just a bratty vent.
