In some denominations, a geographical group of congregations led by a bishop is called a diocese. And no one can agree on how to pronounce this word, or even worse, its plural. Fortunately Lutherans call ours a "synod" (one sɪnəd, two sɪnədz, in ye olde IPA) so we don't usually have this problem.
Unfortunately, the Episcopal church I've currently been going to and its diocese are doing some "right thing for the wrong reason" stuff. Like, it's very good that we/they choose to fund programs that support education and health care and housing on a state level! Not only is that a good thing for a diocese to do, it's almost why we have dioceses in the first place, to run and support programs that are too big for one church and too small for the country-level organization as a whole! And yet...the thought process behind why and how we/they're doing so does not sit right with me. Feh.
