primeidealI went to the Nationals-Cubs game last night, despite some phone issues. The poor Nats and their market research are like "on a scale of 1-10, how was your experience, and why?" and I'm like..."I had a migraine come on quick which was scary and I had to leave a little early to catch the commuter train, so maybe not a 10/10, but 8? but I don't think that's the kind of thing you can control..."
The Cubs have had an erratic season--hot start, then bad, then combined no-hitter, then lost 11 in a row. And with a bunch of big stars becoming free agents at the end of the season, we* had to decide if we were going to stick with them or dump and try to rebuild. The ensuing dumpage was...less gut-wrenching than I feared, I think I've matured from the younger self who got broken up about this kind of thing. (Has it helped that the Cubs have won a championship in between then, and so there's less pressure to be That Franchise With A Narrative, just A Team That Tries To Win But Often Loses Too? ...Probably.)
Anyway, the person who made these tribute videos had a busy 24 hours.
So I picked a good game to go to since it was the only one of the three that Cubs won. Of course they had a bunch of newbies, including this guy, who got two hits in his first two at-bats of the season. Rookie phenom? ...No he debuted in 2010. (Apparently the announcers made the same mistake and then were like "well we sound dumb, oops.")
Edit: forgot to mention, the owner Tom Ricketts was indirectly quoted on the broadcast shortly after as "well it was hard to know how to approach this, but after we lost 11 in a row, that kind of was the trigger." And like...I figured that out as well, I have as much competence as Tom Ricketts to evaluate these things :p
